A young man has been arrested from R. Maduvvari for attacking his older brother out of anger for reportedly constantly demanding money to feed a drug habit.
According to a police spokesperson, “an assault involving two individuals” was reported to the police at around 11:28 pm on Monday.
The police detained a 35-year-old Maldivian male shortly after the attack, said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson added that the victim was treated for his injuries at the Maduvvari Health Center.
A local who spoke to Sun identified the assailant as fellow Maduvvari resident Ismail Asif of Beach House, and the victim as Asif’s older brother.
“He apparently attacked his older brother out of anger for constantly demanding money. Asif has a prior record for a similar incident. His brother is also suspected to be living a life of crime,” said the local.
In 2022, Asif was sentenced to 10 years in prison for repeatedly stabbing fellow Maduvvari resident Ismail Hammad of Fehiali with a knife and throwing him overboard from a fishing vessel in late 2019. Hammadh survived the attack and swam to AA. Maalhos.
He appears to have been released on parole.
“He had been living a decent life following his recent return home. He was getting along well with other people. But he appears to suffer mental issues and is different from other ‘normal’ people,” he said.
The latest assault case is under investigation by the police.
The Maduvvari Council was not immediately available for comment.
