The former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for legal action over the abrupt tree uprooting from Male’ City streets.

Nasheed, who is also the current Secretary General of Climate Vulnerability Forum (CVF), Ghana, in a social media post on Thursday shared a video clip of trees cut down and uprooted at Vilimale’.

The video shows several old trees cut down in a Vilimale’ street. The bricks that were originally laid on one side of the road had been removed and stacked in the middle of the road as well.

While sharing the video clip, Nasheed captioned that the unplanned and abrupt tree uprooting by Male’ City Council was unlawful. He believed the act deserves legal action.

Vilimale’, a separate neighbouring island, is formally identified as a district of Male’ City. The village island is distinctive for its greenery and vegetation. The island also does not use conventional diesel vehicles for transportation, with its locals traversing to places on foot.

Many believe that the Thilamale’ Bridge, which connects to Vilimale’ as well, would bring an end to the idyllic lifestyle of the village district of the capital city.

The government is also attempting to upgrade Vilimale’ roads and streets, which is expected to transform the island’s image significantly.
