The national weather agency has issued a yellow alert for torrential rain for a large part of southern Maldives.
The yellow alert is in effect for the area from Th. Atoll to GDh. Atoll from 09:30 am to 01:30 pm on Saturday.
The weather agency warned the area will be affected by torrential rain and thunderstorms with gusts of 40 miles per hour, as well as rough seas.
The Maldives has been experiencing torrential rain and thunderstorms this month, as the weather transitions from Hulhangu Monsoon to Iruvai Monsoon.
According to the general weather forecast released by the Meteorological Service for Saturday, while scattered showers with a few heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected in central and southern atolls, the weather is expected to be mainly fine in the north, except for a few showers.
The agency had previously said it expects the weather to begin gradually clearing up next week, resulting in calmer seas.
The heavy rain experienced in the Maldives this month resulted in flooding in multiple islands, including the capital Male’ City, leaving scores of people temporarily displaced.
