The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has awarded ‘Medal of Bravery’ to the employees who foiled robbery at a transformer station in Hulhumale’ Phase II recently.

One of the employees who attempted to stop the robbery in progress was attacked with a wrench as well.

STELCO in a post on X confirmed awarding the employees who were harmed while stopping an ongoing robbery on one of its properties. STELCO said awards recognize the bravery of these employees who put their lives on the line of serving their duties to the public.

The utility provider also said it prioritizes employee safety and will take serious action against such occurrences.

Speaking with ‘Sun’ Online, the company’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said STELCO employees had visited the transformer site on Tuesday evening after a power cut in MPL housing towers. At the site, the employees had come across an ongoing robbery.

In an attempt to flee the scene, one of the robbers attacked a STELCO employee with the wrench, Fahmy recounted the incident.

The transformers installed at Hulhumale’ Phase II did not fall within the scope of any STELCO projects, due to which the company had not installed CCTV cameras at the site.

Fahmy added that the company is now working with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to install CCTV cameras on the site.

Robbery of transformers and its components have become prevalent more recently.
