Police seek witnesses who saw the police car accident

Maldives Police Service is seeking any witnesses who saw the accident involving a police car and a motorbike in Hulhumale’ Phase II on December 27th.

The accident took place at around 01:45am on Friday, December 27th at the junction of Nirolhu Magu and Gulalmaa Magu.

According to the police, a police patrol car had been heading from east to west along the Gulalmaa Magu and crossing the Nirolhu Magu when it crashed with a motorcycle, which the police said had been speeding along the Nirolhu Magu.

Police have requested any witnesses who saw the accident to contact Traffic Investigation at 9448800 and share the information.

The 18-year-old youth driving the motorcycle sustained critical head injuries in the accident. He was initially treated at the Hulhumale’ Hospital before getting transferred to IGMH in Male’ City where he remains on ventilator support.

The teen’s father, Ibrahim Shiham told Sun that his son had been stopped by police on December 21 for driving a motorcycle with a modified silencer. He said that the vehicle did not belong to his son, but to one of his friends.

He also said that while the police served papers notifying him that the vehicle was being towed, he was not given any document stating that his license had been suspended.

The police said they found such dangerous accidents “concerning”, and were using a lot of resources to prevent such accidents and ensure road safety.

The police also said they would be conducting an internal investigation for possible negligence from the police officer involved in the crash.
