Met Office: Ongoing bad weather spell to improve on Monday

Maldives Metrological Service (Met Office) has forecasted that the ongoing bad weather spell will improve on Monday.

Speaking with Sun, an official from Met Office said Maldives is expected to experience torrential rain with thunderstorms over the next two days alongside strong winds. The official said the weather is expected to improve on Monday.

Met Office has issued a yellow alert from 23:00pm to 04:00am warning of torrential rain and thunderstorms with gusts of winds up to 40 miles per hour and rough seas. The alert is in effect from Noonu Atoll to Laamu Atoll. 

Notably, Met Office had issued an orange alert to central Maldivian atolls from Baa Atoll to Thaa Atoll, which was in effect until 23:00pm tonight, warning of torrential rain with thunderstorms and flooding. 

Severe floods as a result of non-stop heavy rain in Male’ City have intruded homes and shops, leading to significant damage.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s Fire and Rescue Service is undertaking efforts to drain the floods. In this regard, 16 pumps have been placed across six areas in Male’ City.

Hulhumale’ has also been severely flooded in the heavy rain.

Islands have also reported significant damage following flooding caused by heavy rain and swell waves. MNDF is also active in these islands to minimize damage and assist people impacted by the flooding.

They include K. Maafushi, K. Guraidhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, Dh. Meedhoo, ADh. Maamigili, Sh. Narudhoo and F. Nilandhoo.
