N. Henbadhoo Council states damage to homes from floods caused by heavy rains at Henbadhoo on Tuesday would exceed MVR 600,000.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) earlier reported that 75 homes in Henbadhoo were impacted by floods.
Sharing the latest updates regarding the incident, Henbadhoo Council President Hussain Aboobakr told Sun on Wednesday that 26 homes impacted by floods recorded damage to various extent. Assessments are now being conducted to determine the details of the damage, he added.
“Apart from this, two rooms in the council building and the Waste Management Centre were also impacted [by floods]. Huge machinery there are underwater. Expensive furniture in many households were broken. Thus, damage would be valued at approximately six or seven lakhs,” he said.
Aboobakr detailed that most homes impacted by floods recorded damage to furniture and appliances, thus, did not require temporary housing.
Another island impacted by floods caused by heavy rains was N. Kendhikulhudhoo.
Kendhikulhudhoo Council President Mohamed Rauf told Sun that 30 homes were impacted in flooding, adding damage assessment was presently underway.
He added that homes were still tenantable despite damage to household items.
Lh. Kurendhoo also recorded floods caused by heavy rain. Kurendhoo Council member Zifla Ibrahim said some homes on the island were impacted in the floods.
However, she stressed that damage this time around was far less compared to damage from floods caused by heavy rain back in November. Damage assessment at homes impacted by floods is presently underway, she added.
A total of 104 homes in Kurendhoo were impacted by floods back in November.
All councils of the three islands affirmed that the extent of damage can only be placed once damage assessment is complete. They also confirmed they no individual has been provided temporary housing.
Maldives is currently experiencing a bad weather spell. Henceforth, authorities have urged the public to take the necessary precautionary measures.
