Emergency motion filed at Parliament condemns MDP for calling to do to President ‘what was done to Amin’

A lawmaker from the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) filed an emergency motion at the Parliament on Tuesday condemning officials from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for calling to do to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu what was done to former President Mohamed Amin Didi – a remark that the lawmaker said constitutes to incitement to terrorism.

The motion, submitted by Milandhoo MP Hassan Mufeed Abdul Gadir, was accepted into the Parliament on Tuesday morning with a vote of 44-8, with one abstaining.

In his motion, Mufeed accused MDP officials of repeatedly inciting terrorism during various public events.

He said that such calls are criminalized under the Counter-Terrorism Act.

Mufeed condemned the remarks, which he said were designed to create fear within the community and threaten the safety of President Muizzu.

He called on the government to investigate the remarks.

Amin served as the first president of the Maldives in 1953. He was deposed, attacked by an angry mob, and died while in banishment from the serious injuries he sustained in the attack.
