The Health Protection Agency (HPA) advised the public to take protective measures against the haze blanketing the Maldives on Tuesday, with the air quality in Villimale’ reaching 94 in the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The poor air quality has been attributed to a depression over the Bay of Bengal, which is spreading the haze in northern India.

According to IQAir, the air quality in Vilimale’, which lies close to the capital Male’ City, was recorded at 94 on Tuesday – improving from 99 the previous day. The air quality in Male’ is at 82 and the quality in Sh. Funadhoo is at 55.

Air quality with an AQI of 51–100 is considered moderate and acceptable, but there may be some health concerns for people who are sensitive to air pollution.

The HPA has urged the public to take protective measures against the harmful effects of the haze.

  • People suffering from respiratory disease, heart disease and allergies should avoid spending time outdoors.
  • People should wear protective masks when outdoors.
  • Children, the elderly and pregnant women should avoid spending time outdoors.
  • Infants should not be taken outdoors.
  • People must close doors and windows of homes.
  • People should suspend outdoor sports and fitness activities.

Unlike mist or fog, haze is caused by fine particles in the air, which pollute the air and reduce visibility.

The air quality can be checked using the app IQAir.
