Minister: Zakat collection has risen from MVR 14m to nearly MVR 100m

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said on Thursday that efforts to raise public awareness have been effective in boosting annual zakat collection from MVR 14 million to close to MVR 100 million.

In his address at the inauguration of the International Zakat Conference on Thursday morning, Shaheem said that the zakat system has seen advancements in recent years.

He credited this to effective changes brought to the system in 2008, including releasing funding for educational resources to orphans.

He said that the numerous changes made at the time and the various public awareness campaigns has increased zakat collection from MVR 14 million to close to MVR 100 million annually.

Shaheem said that this increase is the result of a change in the mentality of people.

Shaheem said that the zakat system could see further improvements with legislative changes.
