Burglary suspect found hiding in closet with bag over head

A man accused of burglarizing  a home in Male’ was found hiding in a closet in his home with a bag over his head when the police arrived to arrest him, the police told the Criminal Court on Wednesday during the man’s remand hearing.

The suspect, a 33-year-old Maldivian male, was arrested in the case on Tuesday. It marked his 46th arrest in such a case.

The court remanded him in custody of the police for 15 days.

The man is accused of trespassing into and burglarizing a home in Male’ at midnight.

The police submitted CCTV footage showing him entering the home and operating inside the building. He is accused of stealing two expensive phones from the home.

The police told the court that he had attempted to evade arrest, and was found hiding in a closet with a bag over his head when officers went to arrest him.

The man had exercised the right to remain silent during the interrogation. According to him, he decided to exercise the right because an investigator told him to “Hurry up… make a right to remain silent statement.”

He had maintained his silence during the remand hearing.
