The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) kicked off the latest edition of its Human Rights Defenders Training Program on Monday with some 25 participants.
This year’s program, held by the HRCM in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Transparency Maldives, seeks to deepen the understanding of international and national human rights mechanisms and equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to advocate for justice and equality.
The four-day training program is being held in Male’ City.
According to HRCM, the main goal of the program is to create a culture that advocates for the rights of all people.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) identified human rights defenders as individuals or groups who act to promote, protect or strive for the protection and realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms through peaceful means.
The HRCM previously held a Human Rights Defenders Program in 2021 in Kulhudhuffushi City, and one in 2023 in Fuvahmulah City.
The commission said it hopes to create human rights defenders who will collaborate with others to promote awareness regarding human rights, empower marginalized individuals, hold the state accountable, and advocate for human rights.
