Maldives Media Council (MMC)’s President Ahmed Musthafa.

Maldives Media Council (MMC)’s President Ahmed Musthafa has been dismissed from his post at state media, Public Service Media (PSM).

PSM’s board of directors dismissed Musthafa from his post on Thursday.

Sun has learned that Musthafa was dismissed from his post for airing content that violates PSM’s editorial policy while broadcasting the 11th Journalism Awards live on the channel on Wednesday night.

At the time of his dismissal, Musthafa held the post of Technical Operations Manager and had worked at PSM for over 30 years.

Musthafa was appointed to MMC as the member representing TVM. He was elected the Council’s President two years ago.

PSM had come under the fire after it a broadcasted a video shown during the Awards ceremony which showcased a work nominated for an award. The state media subsequently issued a statement citing the video was broadcasted without prior notice to PSM, and violated its editorial policy.

In response, MMC said the applicants for the Journalism Awards, nominees and recipients are confidential to all, including Council members, with the only exception being a dedicated awards committee which oversees matters related to the awards.
