President accepts judges’ gown honoring father’s legacy

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday has accepted the judges’ gown presented in honour of his late father, Sheikh Ustad Hussain Abdul Rahman.

The judges’ gown and a plaque in recognition of his service as a High Court Judge.

The president received the gown and the plaque at the launch of the High Court’s strategic action plan for 2025-2027 as well as the 44^th anniversary since the court’s establishment. The event was held on Saturday evening at the Center for Higher Education Center (CHSE).

The late Sheikh Ustad Abdul Rahman, a law graduate from Al-Azhar University, was among the first appointed High Court judges in the Maldives when the court was established on October 5, 1980.

Besides an illustrious career in the Maldives judiciary, Sheikh Ustad Abdul Rahman is also known for his significant contributions to Islamic education in the Maldives. His most notable work to date includes contributions made to a radio-broadcast program ‘Aleege Mahchah Ayyeh’ (Light upon light) – a program aimed at promoting and increasing awareness of Islamic knowledge among people.

The late judge also served on various committees dedicated to the service of religion, society, and the country. He was also an accomplished writing having authored multiple books and a well-loved and respected societal figure.

In 2013, he was conferred with the National Award for his contributions to Islamic education.

Sheikh Ustad Abdul Rahman passed away amid Hajj pilgrimage on September 29, 2015. President Muizzu, who was the then Housing Minister, was with the late judge at the time of his demise.
