Maldives’ VP calls on Samoan PM; discusses shared challenges

Maldivian Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef paid a courtesy call on Samoan Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa on Wednesday, during which they discussed shared challenges by Male’ and Apia as fellow Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Hussain is currently in Samoa on an official visit to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed avenues for addressing the shared challenges as Commonwealth members and fellow SIDS, including climate change, sustainable development, and safeguarding unique cultures.

They also discussed areas of cooperation, including the environment, climate change, tourism, economic, and trade.

At the meeting, Hussain commended Samoa’s leadership in the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) and in organizing CHOGM 2024.
