Maldives readies introducing death penalty: Home Minister

The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan on Tuesday has revealed that the government is close to implementing death penalty as the capital punishment of the Maldives.

The minister made the remark in a press briefing held at the President’s Office on Tuesday, where he highlighted that several aspects need to be taken into consideration before an official implementation of the death penalty. The minister stressed on the international standards in the implementation of the capital punishment as well.

“Since the punishment is irreversible, there are several factors that should be thoroughly considered and adhered to through the judiciary to ensure due diligence,” Ihusan commented.

The minister noted that currently the relevant bodies are working towards formulating the regulations and policies regarding the implementation of this punitive measure, including the designated venue to deliver the punishment and personnel training.

“Next is the enforcement stage, and for that we require formulating the regulations and policies as well as train the relevant personnel and designate a specific venue for it as well. We can safely assure that this would be introduced as per the announcement,” the minister added.

Previously the minister revealed the state intended on implementing the death penalty, but was looking into all the necessary aspects prior to the implementation. He also assured that the implementation of the capital punishment will not breach the laws.
