Wifag’s death: No sign of sexual abuse

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, said the body of Wifag Ibrahim Adnan who fell to her death from a building in Male’ City showed no sign of sexual abuse as alleged against her family.

Wifag died on August 10th after falling from the 10th floor of Hasova Building in Maafannu district where she resided.

Channel 13 had broadcasted a documentary investigating her death in which huge allegations of sexual abuse were made against her stepfather alongside various allegations against her family.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Chief Superintendent of Police, Head of Major Crime Investigation Hassan Shifau denied the allegations made in the documentary while providing a detailed account of the events surrounding Wifag’s death.

In this regard, he detailed that Wifag fell from the 10th floor of her residence on top of a pickup parked directly below at 17:37 p.m. on August 10th. Within 30 seconds of the fall, the pickup began its journey to the hospital, said Shifau, adding that she fell from 89 feet above and had remained motionless since the fall. 

He detailed that her phone and air pods, which fell into the road during the incident, were retrieved by her mother and later handed over to the Police.

Her body had already been transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) when the fall was reported to the Police.

As the lead investigator in the case, Shifau said Wifag had been undergoing treatment for a mental illness since 2016.

“So far, there are no suspicions towards anybody in this case,” he added.

Shifau said despite allegations of sexual abuse in the case, there has been no corroborating evidence on her body. In this trajectory, he detailed that the Police had performed all necessary tests which did not indicate sexual abuse.

Notably, Channel 13 is under investigation by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission for airing the documentary.
