Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA) has gifted pickups and baler machines to Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) to aid in recycling plastic.
The items were gifted during a ceremony held on Thursday. MOPA’s President Ahmed Maumoon handed over the items which was received by WAMCO’s Managing Director Mujthaba Jaleel.
MOPA, in total, donated four pickups, baler machines and sacks to store plastic bottles.
Speaking at the ceremony, WAMCO’s Managing Director Mujthaba underscored that the company faced various difficulties in the management of plastic.
In this regard, he detailed that a large number of plastic waste from Male’ was presently managed by MOPA. However, he said the items gifted will aid the company in recycling plastics.
“The four pickups will be used in Addu’s Hitahdhoo, Fuvahmulah City and Funadhoo and Gan in Laamu Atoll when we commence the service (plastic management),” he added.
Mujthaba noted that efforts were underway to develop small facilities to manage plastic at WAMCO facilities in the atolls.
MOPA’s President Maumoon who also spoke at the ceremony affirmed the organization’s commitment to assist in the management of plastic for the vast majority of the Maldives. The organization already collects plastic from 65 percent of the nation as per Maumoon. He detailed that the organization collected 239 tons of plastic last year.
