The police have arrested one of three people who impersonated Immigration officers to “raid” an accommodation for expatriate workers to steal from them.
The incident was reported to the police on Monday.
A police spokesperson said on Tuesday that one of the suspects has been arrested under a court warrant. He was identified as Mohamed Naveen, 44, G. Beruge, K. Male’.
According to the police, three people entered the accommodation quarters by impersonating Immigration officers. They stole a mobile phone and MVR 9,000 from a Bangladeshi worker living there.
This case is under investigation by the police, added the spokesperson.
It comes amid a crackdown on illegal migration by the Maldives Immigration Service.
Following reports of individuals posing as officers, Immigration stressed that their officers involved in raids will always carry an official Immigration pass in addition to their uniforms.
“We urge everyone to be cautious and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an immigration officer to avoid falling victim to these fraudulent activities,” said the agency.
