Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef Umar, underscoring that it is unconstitutional to refer to Maldivian capital city, Male’ as “K. Male’”, and thus, has called to correct this.

He made the remark via a post on social media on Friday in which he underscored that many documents presently refer to Male’ as “K. Male’”.

On contrary, he detailed that Article 14 of the Maldivian Constitution cites “Male’” as the capital city of the Maldives.

The Minister said most official documents do not refer to Male’ as “K. Male’” and “K” is not added in front of Male’ despite being in Kaafu Atoll because it is the country's capital.

Henceforth, he said that writing and saying “K. Male’” is unconstitutional. Describing it to be no trivial matter, he emphasized this needs to be corrected.

As capital Male’ is designated as a city, documents sometimes refer to Male’ as Male’ City as well.
