Diamorphine user sentenced to three years in prison

Criminal Court, on Thursday, has sentenced a diamorphine user to three in prison.

Yoosuf Husaam, Blue House, Sh. Milandhoo, was charged with abusing diamorphine, a type of drug.

As per the charge sheet, Heritance Aarah Resort made a report to Maldives Police Service at approximately 21:45pm on May 18, 2019, informing one its staff was in possession of drugs. When the Police arrived at the resort, Husaam was in the security room, holding a Rasly brand supari box which was searched by the Police. Two rubber packets containing substances suspected to be drugs were discovered inside the box, read the charges sheet. It was detailed that the substances tested positive for diamorphine citing the test report.

Husaam first denied the charges in the case, however, later pled guilty.

He requested a lighter sentence under the discretion allowed for the judge. 

Criminal Court sentenced Husaam to three years in prison, citing he had pled guilty to the charge of diamorphine trafficking and the charge was proven beyond reasonable doubt.

As per the Drug Act, the punishment for abusing diamorphine and cannabis is three years in prison.

Meanwhile, the punishment for trafficking or abetting in the trafficking of these types of drugs is 18 years in prison alongside a fine between MVR 75,000 and MVR 7,500,000.
