Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM), previously under the Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, has been destinated under the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology effective of Tuesday.

The reassignment was made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu via directive under powers vested in him by Article 116(a) of the Maldivian constitution.

CAM is mandated with regulating the communications sector, creating an environment conducive for promoting competition in communications services and developing these services in accordance with the national policies. The communications sector includes telecommunications, post and information technology.

Some of the authority’s responsibilities include:

  • Declaring the standards of telecommunication services in the Maldives
  • Inspecting and licensing of telecommunications equipment used in the Maldives
  • Regulating work carried out with respect to satellite communication and ensuring they are up to part with the standards of International Telecommunications Union and other relevant international organizations
  • Licensing radio communication equipment and spectrum usage and overseeing relevant matters
  • Registration of postal service providers in the Maldives
  • To provide consultation and advise on behalf of the Maldives on setting international standards for the regulation of the postal sector and representing Maldives in international postal forums

CAM was established in 2016 and had functioned under Ministry of Environment and Technology before the current administration reassigned the authority to the Local Government Ministry.
