Over 1900 accidents so far in 2024; a 431-case increment

Maldives Police Service says 1,907 accident cases have been reported so far in 2024, which is a 431-case increment from the same period last year as per statistics.

As per statistics from the authority, a total of 1,476 accidents were reported for the corresponding period (from January to August end) last year. On a monthly basis, the number of accidents reported last year are as follows;

  • January: 149
  • February: 196
  • March: 190
  • April: 174
  • May: 179
  • June: 168
  • July: 202
  • August: 218

While an average of 184.5 incidents per month was reported in the first eight months of 2023, the average increased to 238.38 cases per month for the corresponding period in 2024. As such, the number of cases reported on a monthly basis for the first eight months of this year, are as follows;

  • January: 263
  • February: 267
  • March: 301
  • April: 221
  • May: 226
  • June: 215
  • July: 210
  • August: 204

In both years, majority of incidents were reported in Greater Male’ area – which include Male’ City, Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’ – police stations, with a total of 1,171 cases reported to these stations so far this year while for the same period last year, these stations lodged 1,071 cases.
