Dr. Jauhary becomes College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences’ first dean

Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauhary has become the first dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences – a college established through a partnership between the Fisheries Ministry and the Maldives National University (MNU).

MNU’s Chancellor Dr. Mohamed Shaugee announced the appointment in a post on his Facebook account on Sunday morning.

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences is set begin courses soon. Applications are currently available for several fulltime courses across the country, including in Male’ City, Kulhudhuffushi City, Addu City, and L. Gan. This includes:

  • National Certificate III in Sports Fishing Guiding: Male’, Kulhudhuffushi City, S. Hithadhoo
  • National Certificate I in Fish Processing and Quality Control: Male’, L. Gan
  • National Certificate II in Fish Processing and Quality Control: Male’, L. Gan
  • National Certificate III in Fish Processing and Quality Control: Male’, L. Gan

The Fisheries Ministry and MNU signed the agreement to establish the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences in December last year.

The establishment of such a college was one of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledges.

Though fishing is the oldest profession in the Maldives, the number of people who attain higher education in the field is relatively low.
