Parliament readies for extraordinary sittings

Despite the recess, members of the parliament are willing to hold extraordinary sittings when required, says Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

During Wednesday’s press conference, Abdul Raheem emphasized that the public entrusted the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) with a supermajority, confident that their needs would be addressed effectively without obstacles.

He added the party’s parliamentary members were ready for extraordinary sitting if and when required to attend to crucial matters of public interest.

“God willing, we are ready with parliament sittings once the government is ready,” the Speaker said.

The parliament concluded its first term and subsequently went into recess last Thursday, with a work completion percentile of 82.9 percent of the planned works.

The parliament held 33 sittings, with a combined total of 75 hours spent on these sessions before the recess, and completed 76 tasks with 63 issues in pending.

Parliament’s second term will begin with the first meeting scheduled for October 3, 2024.
