USD 9.5M project aimed at transforming education sector launched

A USD 9.5 million project aimed at transforming the education sector has been launched on Thursday.

The ‘Education Transformation Initiative’ project was launched by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef during a ceremony held at Hotel Jen alongside the program document and the project website.

The project undertaken through a USD 9.5 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) for the progress of the Maldivian education sector. 

The project comprises of three separate grants:

  • A USD 5 million system transformation grant with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) as grant agent
  • A USD 1.5 million system capacity grant with UNICEF as a grant agent
  • A 3 million multiplier grant with the World Bank (WB) as a grant agent

Efforts that will be undertaken under the project to transform the education sector are as follows:

Increasing the quality of education

  • Training teachers
  • Ensuring schools are a safe place for children
  • Equality in the provision of education to students
  • Development of additional schools

Notably, Maldives became a board member of GEP this year and will remain so until 2026.
