Fenaka Corporation, which provides electricity in Addu City, states the prevailing electricity issue in the City will be resolved within two years.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Fenaka’s Managing Director Muaz Mohamed Rasheed said there are ongoing intermittent power outages in Addu City’s Hithadhoo district.

Muaz, underscoring that Fenaka currently provides electricity in Hithadhoo with significant difficulties, said the company’s management was undertaking various efforts to improve Addu City’s electricity service.

“We have made an agreement with a Chinese company. By the will of Almighty, a permanent solution for Addu City’s electricity issue can be achieved at the completion of this project within the next two years. The project was awarded to a Chinese company named DEC,” he said.

China’s Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) was contracted to develop a 30-megawatt power plant in Addu City to resolve the electricity issue at the linked islands on April 18th.

Speaking further, Muaz said electricity is currently being provided in Addu City using approximately 18 generators as some of the generators utilized in the provision of the service are broken due to failure to properly maintain them.

He noted that efforts were underway to acquire spare parts required to improve the functioning of the generators and send new generators to replace the broken ones.

Muaz also said efforts were underway to resolve the electricity issues at islands with large populations at which Fenaka provides electricity, including Kulhudhuffushi City and Fuvahmulah City.

In this trajectory, he detailed that approximately MVR 800 million or MVR 1 billion will be incurred to upgrade the electricity networks at 90 islands at which the company provides the service. While the funds will be acquired with the assistance of the government, Muaz said priority will be allocated to islands that are the most in need of upgrades to the electricity network.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ibrahim Thoriq said on Tuesday that a new generator has been purchased to resolve the intermittent power outages in the linked islands of Addu City, adding the new generator will be installed within the next month.

This was after main opposition MDP submitted an emergency motion to the parliament last week over the continuous power outages in Addu City hindering the lives of its residents greatly.
