President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to all Maldivian citizens on the occasion of the country’s 59th Independence Day.
He delivered the greetings via a post on social media platform X.
In his post, the President prayed for Maldives to always be blessed with independence.
Maldives became a British protectorate in the 19th century.
The country gained total independence from the British on July 26, 1965, following the signing of The Declaration of Independence by then-Maldivian Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir.
Henceforth, Maldives marks July 26th as its Independence Day.
The official Independence Day function will be held at the Social Centre tonight. President Muizzu will address the nation during the ceremony, said the President’s Office.
Awards will also be presented to 138 long-serving civil servants during the ceremony. They include 70 individuals who have served the state for over 43 years.
