Boat traveling to Lhaviyani Atoll with four aboard begins sinking

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), on Friday night, reported that a boat traveling to Lhaviyani Atoll with four aboard began sinking after taking in water.

MNDF, in a message to the media, said they received a report of a boat, ‘Loom 2’, starting to sink after taking in water off K. Helegeli at approximately 20:52pm tonight.

According to the authority, the boat began taking in water after hitting a rock while exiting the channel.

Following the report, MNDF’s Male’ area Command’s Coastgaurd’s Second Squadron has begun assisting the boat and the crew aboard.

On Monday, Ulhiashi Boat, a vessel that travels between the Maldivian capital and several islands in Shaviyani Atoll sank while carrying a large amount of cargo.

A crew member told Sun that the boat took in damage after colliding with the breakwater of the channel while entering Bilehfahi harbor.

Subsequently, the vessel began taking in water and by the time it had docked at Bilehfahi harbor, a part of it had already sunk.
