Three aboard boat that ran aground rescued while stranded at sea

A boat carrying cargo such as wooden planks en route to Th. Veymandoo from Male’ ran aground near V. Dhiggiri early Sunday morning.

Police said they received a report that a boat named ‘Al Majra’ was taking in water after running aground on a reef near Dhiggiri at approximately 5:34am.

According to the Police, Vaavu Atoll Police attended to the scene following the report and rescued three crew members who were aboard the boat that got stranded on the reef following the incident. They were identified as a Maldivian and two Bangladeshis.

Police said the three crew members were taken aboard the Police speedboat and transported to V. Fulidhoo. All three are in good health, the authority added.

Citing the crew members, Police said the boat was carrying a large number of wooden plans and similar goods at the time it sank. As such, Police urged vessels traveling in the area to exercise caution.

Notably, a similar incident took place on Saturday as well. In this regard, three crew members were rescued by the Coastguard after the boat they were on, transporting waste from a resort in northern Maldives to K. Thilafushi, ran aground on a reef off an uninhabited island in N. Atoll.

The sea accidents come as the Maldives currently experiences a bad weather spell. According to Maldives Metrological Service (Met Office), majority of Maldivian regions are expected to experience bad weather over the next three days.
