A Maldivian man from Hithadhoo, Addu City, who was working in a resort died on Thursday, while rescuing a tourist who was struggling to swim in the resort island’s waters.
The incident took place at around 11:00 am on Thursday, at the Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa, located in ADh. Atoll.
According to the police, it initially received report of a 39-year-old Maldivian male who was receiving treatment following a drowning accident.
The Dhangethi Health Center reported to the police that he was already deceased when taken to the health center, said a police spokesperson.
The police said that he died while rescuing a tourist from drowning.
The tourist survived, and is doing well, according to the police.
The police are looking into the incident.
The tragic death comes with an orange alert in place for parts of northern and central Maldives, as the country experiences intense monsoon rains, with strong winds triggering waves of up to 10 feet.
On Wednesday, the police urged the public against all non-essential travel. The agency also advised the public against going to picnics in uninhabited islands and going swimming.
