Police issues manhunt on new fraud suspect

Maldives Police Service on Wednesday has announced manhunt on a new fraud suspect, the second in one week.

Police issued the manhunt on a 51 year-old man named Abdulla Niyaz, regarding an ongoing investigation by GA. Vilingili Police Station.

Authorities have not been able to gather the suspect's whereabouts, due to which they have ordered the individual to visit the nearest police station from his location according to Article 27 of the Police Procedural Regulation.

Cases of fraud, misrepresentation and scams have risen significantly in recent months.

Police earlier confirmed 1,081 scam cases were reported in 2022, and 971 cases in 2023. Despite a decline in case numbers last year, police said the combined monetary loss was higher compared to 2022.

Meanwhile, several large-scale scams have been reported so far this year as well.
