12 incidents last two weeks, mostly roof ripping

According to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) a total of 12 weather-related incidents were reported in the last two weeks, most of which included roofs ripping off from houses.

NDMA has shared details of incidents reported from across the Maldives amid the ongoing stormy weather conditions nationwide.

May 14 - HA. Dhidhdhoo & Th. Thimarafushi

Roofs ripped off from six houses in HA. Dhidhdhoo on May 14, while 12 houses of the island sustained various damages according to NDMA.

The authority confirmed Dhidhdhoo Island Council and its public helped repair the damaged roofs as a temporary solution. The council had instructed on purchasing roof sheets, and NDMA confirmed it would cover expenses.

NDMA further revealed the roof of one of the houses was fully repaired, while Dhidhdhoo council had completed the damage assessment report.

Meanwhile, in central parts of Maldives, 50 houses in Thaa atoll Thimarafushi experienced floods due to heavy rainfall.

The island's council has been assessing the damages sustained by 32 residences. The council was expected to share information about the status of these residences with NDMA as well.

May 18 - F. Feeali, K. Hulhumale', S. Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Fuvahmulah City, and Dh. Bandidhoo

Hulhumale' Lot 20111 was flooded with damages to furniture and appliances, but no further details were shared by NDMA.

F. Feeali experienced heavy rainfall as well. NDMA had requested the island's council to provide the completed damage assessment form, but did not receive it at the time of reporting.

The roof of a S. Maradhoo-Feydhoo residence ripped off. Addu City Council had reported the incident and provided damage assessment report to NDMA.

The roof of a residence in Fuvahmulah City had ripped off on the same date as well. The city council later confirmed the roof was fully repaired.

A similar incident occurred in Dh. Bandidhoo as well. The roof was repaired with the assistance from public, according to NDMA. The island's council provided the damage assessment report as well.

May 19 - V. Fulidhoo, S. Feydhoo, Sh. Maaungoodhoo, and Lh. Naifaru

The Satlink Internet antannae fell on the roof of the island's e-center. As per NDMA, there were no injuries or property damages in the incident.

A sheet from a S. Feydhoo residence had ripped off on the same day due to strong winds. The house did not suffer any further damages according to NDMA.

Two trees in Sh. Maaungoodhoo were uprooted due to gusts as well. 

The trees were removed and the area cleared up with the assistance from MTCC and Fenaka. Other areas of the island had reported similar incidents on the same date as well.

In Lh. Naifaru, the roof of a residence was ripped off. The island's council provided damage assessment report to NDMA.

Wednesday - B. Eydhafushi

The roofs of the toilets in Eydhafushi children's park and the waste management center were ripped off, while three areas of the island reported tree uprooting incidents as well.

Similar incidents have been reported from Greater Male' Region, especially from Male' City.

With gusts expected to pick up pace up to 60 miles per hour, the Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) issued an orange alert effective from 09:00hrs until 12:00hrs on Wednesday, which was extended until 16:00hrs.

Weather conditions worsen during May, June, and July every year.

Meanwhile, both NDMA and MET Office have issued advisories cautioning public to take safety measures, especially to seafarers before embarking on trips.
