Deputy minister suspended for ‘misconduct’

Mohamed Shifaz, a deputy minister at the Sports Ministry, has been placed under suspension.

An official from the Sports Ministry confirmed Shifaz was suspended on Wednesday.

According to the official, Shifaz was suspended “for breaching the code of conduct for political appointees.”

However, the official declined to specify the exact reason for the suspension

It is also unclear whether Shifaz was placed under paid suspension or not.

The latest suspension comes after three deputy ministers at the Youth Ministry – Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoon Majid – were suspended in January following derogatory social media comments about India, and the country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi.

They remain on paid suspension, to date.
