The Tree Top Hospital – which opened Maldives’ first fertility clinic last year – is now celebrating the birth of two babies conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at the facility.

Tree Top, a tertiary hospital located in Hulhumale’, opened its IVF clinic in May last year. The government began providing Aasandha coverage for the IVF, as well as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) procedures, this year.

In a press conference on Wednesday morning, Tree Top’s COO Adil Moosa said the mother of the hospital’s first IVF baby had previously unsuccessfully undergone the treatment four times, from overseas facilities.

But the 36-year-old woman, who Tree Top said also suffered from other medical complications, had conceived on the first try at the hospital.

She gave birth to a healthy baby on Sunday. The hospital later welcomed the birth of a second IVF baby, on Tuesday.

Dr. Zakiya Ahmed, who heads Tree Top’s fertility clinic, said the hospital has now conducted IVF treatment for four batches of patients.

She added that the clinic recently hired a full-time embryologist, which has helped put an end to the need to waitlist patients.

Tree Top’s CEO, Dr. Srivatsan Sridhar said the success is an achievement for the Maldivian medical industry, and one which brings hope to desperate families.

The hospital previously said it invested around USD 1 million to open its fertility clinic.

It offers IVF treatment for MVR 46,000.

In addition to IVF, the clinic also provides IUI and ICSI treatment.

Tree Top said it is committed to providing treatment for major medical issues facing the Maldives, and announced plans to begin kidney transplants, next.
