Schools closed for long holidays after report giving on Tuesday.

This marks the conclusion of the academic year 2023-2024, which began last May.

However, tenth graders are still doing their O’ Level examinations.

The next academic year is slated to begin in May. The first term of the academic year 2024-2025 which will begin in May will conclude on September 26.

The second term, meanwhile, will commence on October 6th and conclude on next year’s April 6th.

The current administration has decided to shift back the commencement of the academic new year to January, from 2026 onwards.

Shifting the commencement of the academic new year to January is an electoral pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The former administration shifted the commencement of the academic new year to mid-year in light of the fact that December accounted for tourism peak season due to which tourism sector workers are unable to spend the holidays with their children.

Former Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali said the change was made after research. However, with the enforcement of the change, it was highly critiqued as June and July, which would be the long holidays, are months where monsoon rain is experienced obstructing travel.
