MDA’s President, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed who is contesting for re-election in the upcoming parliamentary election states his vision for the constituency is to eliminate poverty in the next five years.

He made the remark while speaking at a campaign rally in Dh. Hulhudheli, one of the islands in the constituency, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the rally, Siyam said happiness and contentedness cannot be achieved if there is poverty in the society. Underscoring that poverty creates additional issues in the society – he expressed his desire to ensure financial stability for not just Meedhoo constituents, but also all Maldivian citizens.

“I do not want a single person from these four islands to be on the list of low-income individuals. That is my goal. I want to achieve this,” he said.

Speaking further, Siyam said he is well aware of the needs of Hulhudheli residents. He cited housing constraints and lack of ways to earn an income while based on the island as the biggest difficulties faced by Hulhudheli residents.

He expressed hope to resolve the housing constraints on the island over the next five years by collaborating with the government.

Siyam also spoke regarding the importance of unity among Maldivian citizens in his speech. In this regard, he appealed to the residents to not obstruct development despite differences in opinion.

He also announced plans to implement projects at Hulhudheli to promote unity and friendship among residents.

Some of these plans, as per Siyam, include the development of a facility where elderly people can play sports in collaboration with the island’s council and a similar facility for women. He also said an electric buggy service will be launched for the elderly and people with mobile impairments to assist them in transportation to places across the island.

Siyam has served as the parliamentarian for Meedhoo constituency comprising of Meedhoo, Hulhudheli, Rinbudhoo and Bandidhoo in the past four parliamentary terms.
