Foreigners who distributed Dhivehi language bibles get 10-day remand

The two foreigners who were arrested while distributing copies of the bible in Dhivehi language at Hiyaa Flat area in Huhumale’ Phase II were remanded in custody for 10 days on Thursday.

Photos of two foreign women went viral on social media on Wednesday, claiming they were distributing items that go against the Islamic religion. The photos show that the foreign women were distributing copies of the bible in Dhivehi language and business cards containing links to articles that go against the Islamic religion.

Police, in a message to the media, said the women were taken into custody for distribution of writings that violate the Religious Unity Act of the Maldives. 

They identified the two as German nationals who had entered the Maldives on tourist visas.

A viral post on social media claimed the two women were Americans. Photos show them near the mailbox area of a Hiyaa flat.
