Physical works on cat shelter commences

Physical works on the cat shelter being developed by Male’ City Council and Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in Hulhumale’ commenced on Tuesday.

Physical works on the cat shelter located at Hulhumale’ Farukolhufushi was inaugurated during a special ceremony held at the premises on Tuesday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim said the work being commenced today pertains to the installation of the fence – which he said is expected to reach completion within the next 20 days. Meanwhile, physical works on the building will commence next week, he added.

“The hope is to complete the development of facility within the next two months and make arrangements to relocate the stray cats in Male’ City to the facility, neuter them and for them to live in this place,” he said.

Azim, detailing that the cat shelter is targeted to be completed as soon as possible, said the government has also appealed to finish the development of the facility at the earliest.

As per the mayor, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare will undertake all technical works related to the facility while Male’ City Council will undertake all physical works.

The cat shelter is being developed on a 5,000 square feet of land and will be open for service 24/7.

The project seeks resolve the issue of the growing stray cat population in greater Male’ area – which has previously been placed by Azim at 3,000.
