Council issued land from Hulhumale’ to develop cat shelter

The land to build the temporary cat shelter jointly being developed by Male’ City Councils and Animal Welfare Ministry was handed over to the council on Friday.

The land, measuring in 5,000 square feet from Hulhumale’, was handed over to the council by Animal and Welfare Ministry.

The projects involved the relocation of stay cats in Male’ City to the shelter where they can receive treatment.

Prior to this, State Minister for Animal Welfare Hussain Ismail said that the government’s long-term plan is to turn the temporary cat shelter into a pet care facility.

“This is will done within 12 to 18 months. By the time its done, the place will have cat cafes or cat hotels, clinics, and also stalls,” he said.

He said the pet shelter is aimed at the issue of the growing stray cat population in greater Male’ area.
