Desalination plants established at five islands with China’s grant assistance

Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure states desalination plants that will operate on renewable energy have been established at five islands with grant assistance from the Chinese government.

The desalination plants were established at R. Alifushi, Lh. Olhuvelifushi, HA. Kelaa, GA. Dhaandhoo and K. Kaashidhoo. The Ministry said the desalination plants were established and handed over to the government on January 30th.

The completion of the project was marked during a special ceremony held at Kaashidhoo on Friday which was honored by Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin.

As per the Ministry, the desalination plants in Alifushi, Olhuvelifushi, Kelaa and Dhaandhoo has the capacity to produce 200 tonnes of water per day and is equipped with a 200KW solar panel.

While the desalination plant at Kaashidhoo also has the capacity to produce 200 tonnes of water per day the plant is equipped with a 100KW solar panel.

Physical work on this project commenced in April 2022. Following the completion of the physical works, the technical handover certificate was signed on October 12, 2023.
