Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA)’s President, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, on Friday, emphasized the need to increase the participation of women in politics.
Siyam made the remark in an address to the nation on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
In his message, Siyam extended greetings on the occasion to all the women in the Maldives, girls and especially MDA’s female members.
Underscoring the importance of all members of the public taking part in recognizing the invaluable work undertaken by women for the sake of the nation on International Women’s Day – Siyam stressed the need to take further action despite Maldives’ successes achieved in terms of gender equality.
In this trajectory, he stressed the need to take further action to eliminate gender inequality and violence against women.
“Increasing the women’s participation in the political arena than at present is an important step towards establishing gender equality and eliminating violence against women,” he said.
Siyam cited politics as one of the most difficult sectors for women to enter.
“It is extremely important to pave way for women’s participation within the executive system, legislative system and the judicial system,” he said.
Siyam concluded his message by wishing prosperity for women. He also offered a prayer to Almighty Allah wishing for Maldives to be a safe society for all citizens, especially women. He also prayed for the Maldivian society to move forward with equal participation of both men and women.
