President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, assured his administration will undertake efforts to amend the law in order to pave the way for administrative staff in local councils or civil servants to receive promotions or salary increments upon furthering their education.

He made the remark while responding to Azzaa Abdul Ghafoor from N. Manadhoo – an administrative staff at the island’s council, who had expressed concern regarding the salary and allowances of administrative staff of local councils on the ‘Raees ge Javaabu’ series on Friday; a platform that enables the public to get direct responses to their queries and concerns from the President.

She had inquired regarding increments in their salaries upon furthering their education.

Responding to the question, President Muizzu, who has also served as Male’ City’s Mayor, remarked he had closely witnessed the staff of councils undertake hefty work, day and night, in the provision of services to the public. He said he is well aware of the legal obstructions in terms of increasing the salaries of council staff – having involved himself in this work during his tenure as the mayor.

“Councils are in the lowest tier from the categories categorized by the parliament. Hence, I want to remedy this when we formulate our pay structure,” he added.

President Muizzu noted that council administrative staff, on contrary to other offices, are providing services around the clock.

“Legal issues are in play in here. It is because of the legal issues there has been no agreement between civil service and LGA,” he said.

“It also includes amendments that need to be brought to certain legal provisions within the parliament,” he added.

He affirmed his administration’s commitment to work within the parliament to pave the way for salary increments for council administrative staff upon furthering their education.
