President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Monday, stressed the importance of ensuring the government receives the majority in the upcoming parliamentary election with respect to efforts presently underway to develop the nation and ensure its independence.

Speaking to Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo residents of Addu City on Monday as part of his visit to the southernmost Maldivian atolls – President Muizzu said that although the government wishes to do a multitude of things for the people, the composition of the Maldives’ administration hinders the government from accomplishing this if they do not secure the parliament’s majority.

Therewith, he emphasized the need for the parliament to be one that cooperates with the government.

In this trajectory, he called upon the people to make a responsible decision in the upcoming parliamentary election, adding that the government securing the majority in the parliament was crucial to the development of the island and the whole nation.

Underscoring that his appeal was not political – President Muizzu said that the parliamentary election was also crucial to ensure no obstruction to the efforts underway to guarantee the nation’s independence by withdrawing the foreign troops currently based in the Maldives.

Speaker further, the President reiterated his intention to honor all pledges he has made to Addu residents. In this regard, he said the bridge project signed on Monday, will be initiated this year, and completed in four years.

An MoU was signed for the preliminary design and survey work of the bridge project connecting Hithadhoo to Hulhudhoo-Meedhoo in Addu City at Monday’s meeting. The project was awarded to Egypt’s The Arab Contractors.
