Justice Suood sworn-in as a member of JSC

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Justice Husnu Al Suood to Judicial Service Commission (JSC), as the member representing the Supreme Court.

Justice Suood took his oath before the president during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Thursday afternoon. The oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain.

President Muizzu then presented the letter of appointment to Justice Suood, who signed the letter upon presentation.

The President’s Office said Justice Suood was appointed to the JSC as per Article 158(b) of the Maldivian constitution and Article 3(2) of the Judicial Service Commission Act as the representative of the Supreme Court appointed by the court.

Supreme Court appointed Justice Suood to represent that court at JSC on Tuesday.

The court said Justice Suood was appointed following the resignation of Justice Aisha Shujuoon who had been representing the court at JSC.

Justice Shujoon was appointed to the commission in December 2019. Her term is set to expire late this year.

Supreme Court did not disclose the reason behind Justice Shujoon’s resignation.

Justice Suood has extensive experience in the legal and judicial sector, holding crucial posts over the years. He has served as a member of JSC prior to this, in 2010. He was appointed a Supreme Court justice in December 2019.

JSC is currently composed of:

• Parliament speaker
• A representative from the Parliament
• A representative of the President
• A Supreme Court justice
• A High Court judge
• A lower court judge
• A representative of the general public approved by Parliament
• Civil Service Commission’s President
• Attorney General

The presence of politicians in the JSC often sparks allegations of political influence in decisions.
