International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) has expressed concern over the brutal attack on Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem.
Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office), in a statement on Tuesday, said IPA’s Secretary General Roel Dona has sent a letter to the office, expressing concern over the incident.
As per the office, the letter called upon relevant Maldivian authorities to conduct a timely investigation into the incident and take action against the suspects involved in the attack.
The importance of ensuring the safety and security Shameem and other prosecutors in the Maldives was also underscored in the letter which raised concern over the safety and security of local prosecutors.
Maldives is represented in the IAP, and Shameem is a member of the association.
Shameem had been out jogging on a street in Male’ City last Wednesday morning, when he was attacked with a weapon by two people on a motorbike.
He fractured his left arm in the attack.
Two suspects have been jailed pending the trial’s end in connection to the attack.
Speaking at a press briefing last Thursday, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau said the police had launched an immediate investigation following the attack, utilizing all its resources.
The police believe it likely there are more people behind the attack, based on past experience with similar cases.
The attack had come just after the security the police had been providing to Shameem due to a court case ended.
The Prosecutor General’s Office, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has strengthened Shameem’s security in the wake of the attack.
