Speaker Aslam, Deputy Speaker Saleem served notice over no-confidence motion

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem have been served notice regarding the no-confidence motions against both individuals by the ruling PPM-PNC coalition.

The ruling coalition filed no-confidence motions against Speaker Aslam and Deputy Speaker Saleem amid the disagreements that arose in the parliament following main opposition MDP’s decision to withhold approval to some cabinet ministers last Sunday.

Parliament Secretariate’s Communications Director Hassan Ziyau told Sun that both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker have been served notice regarding the no-confidence motions filed against them.

He added that the no-confidence motions against both individuals have been slated on the agenda of the sitting scheduled for February 19^th.

PPM-PNC coalition’s no-confidence motion accuses  Speaker Aslam of misusing his official capacity to complement the interests of a certain party.

The coalition also states Speaker Aslam initially sent back the Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee’s report on cabinet approval in violation of the parliament’s regulation.

It was submitted with the signatures of 23 MPs, including signatures from MPs representing MDA, MNP and independent MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla.

The 19^th parliament will convene for the first sitting of its last session on Monday during which President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will deliver his first presidential address.

A no-confidence motion means no further parliamentary works can proceed without reaching a decision on the motion. Notably, Aslam was appointed speaker following the resignation of former speaker Mohamed Nasheed after Supreme Court ruled his no-confidence motion had been stalled in violation of the law.
