President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to undertake an official to China.
Sun has learned that the President is scheduled to depart for China sometime this month. However, the government has yet to disclose details regarding the visit.
President Muizzu’s first visit overseas after assuming office on November 17th was to Türkiye on November 27th at the invitation of the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. During the visit, both leaders discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
He then directly traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates to attend the Twenty-Eighth Session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
He arrived back in the Maldives after concluding the trip on December 3rd.
While President Muizzu is due to visit China this month, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef undertook an official visit to China in December to attend the ‘China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Development Cooperation’ organized by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
The current administration maintains a close relationship with China. President Muizzu has been dubbed ‘pro-China’ by foreign media outlets; a label he has refused, citing he is ‘pro-Maldives’.
