Constructions Ministry states the maintenance of Sinmale’ bridge – the largest infrastructural development project carried out during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s administration – is being carried out by a Chinese company.
The statement follows public concern over the maintenance of Sinamale’ Brige.
A senior official from the Ministry told Sun that the former administration had signed a two-year contract with a Chinese company regarding the maintenance of the bridge, and had initiated discussions regarding extending the agreement.
The new administration is continuing the discussions, said the official.
The official cited the biggest obstruction to carrying out maintenance of large projects undertaken in the Maldives as securing funds. However, the official said awarding maintenance of the bridge permanently to the company would resolve the issue.
Sinamale’ bridge – valued at USD 200 million – was completed and inaugurated on August 30, 2018.
