Discussions have been held with the World Trade Organization (WTO) on ways to increase the inflow of foreign direct investment into the Maldives.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and the Director General of WTO Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Monday on the sidelines of the vice president’s ongoing visit to Switzerland, to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75). Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hussain Mohamed Shareef joined VP Latheef at the meeting.
During the meeting, VP Latheef expressed appreciation for the technical support of the WTO to the Maldives, and highlighted the government's commitment to cooperate and collaborate further.
He also spoke on the importance of restructuring the debt of Maldives and discussed ways to increase the inflow of foreign direct investment into the country.
VP Latheef and Director General Okonjo-Iweala also discussed strengthening the Maldives' relationship with the WTO and exploring new avenues of cooperation.
Maldives became a member of WTO on May 31, 1995.
